What to Expect During a Reflexology Session
If you’re relatively new to the worlds of massage or alternative medicine, you may find yourself wondering, what exactly is reflexology? How is it different from a typical massage? What are the benefits of it? We’re here to help you make sense of it and discover whether or not reflexology could be beneficial to you!
What is Reflexology?
Reflexology comes from an ancient Chinese belief in qi, or vital energy. According to Chinese tradition, qi flows through everyone and can be blocked when a person feels stressed, causing an imbalance within the body.
It is believed in traditional Chinese medicine that different pressure points throughout the body correspond to other parts of the body. Reflexology uses these pressure points to manipulate the flow of qi to reach the part of the body that is in need of healing. During a reflexology session, our massage therapists will focus on specific pressure points in your feet to correct the flow of energy throughout your body.
What are the Benefits of Reflexology?
Reflexology has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and pain, in addition to boosting your mood and improving the general wellbeing of the recipient of the massage. Although not necessarily proven, many people have reported that reflexology has also helped to boost their immune system, clear up sinuses, ease arthritis pain, and even boost fertility.
What is a Reflexology Session Like?
During a reflexology session, your massage therapist will use maps of the pressure points in your feet to determine where to apply pressure depending on the parts of your body that need to be balanced or healed.
While the massage therapist will sometimes specifically focus on certain areas of your feet if you have a specific condition, like migraines, they will also work all other areas of the feet during the session. This allows your nerve pathways to remain clear and uncongested, promoting relaxation.
One thing that’s important to remember is that reflexology is NOT about releasing pain, as many other forms of massage are. The goal of reflexology is to bring your whole body into balance, which is done by applying pressure to the nerves in your feet. While this practice is a very relaxing experience overall, you may experience some pain or discomfort in your feet as a result of the pressure-- but don’t worry, it will subside!
Most people consider reflexology sessions to be a unique experience. It has been reported that you may feel a sense of lightness or weightlessness throughout your body, as well as the movement of energy to every part of your body.
